Now I got my answer. It was time. The marriage had run its course. The only thing left was the cooling-off period until the divorce came into effect. T-minus, one month. What a coincidence. The wedding she promised me would happen in one month. … T-minus, 22 days. Lauren was leaving early and coming back late a lot more than usual. The promise of a wedding might as well have never existed.

Time was running out. And the next move had to be mine.

I downed it faster than I should have. He was right about that too. I was running out of time. Out of options. Out of ways to keep all the pieces from colliding. Something had to give. The question was what.

I didn’t have time to ponder what I’d just done, I knew it would only be a matter of time before more showed up. Weather took off running again and not once did we look back.

I stared at the empty chair, my hands slowly curling into fists until my nails bit into my palms. Maya had played her final card and walked away while we were all distracted. I looked at Killian, my voice barely above a whisper, raw with exhaustion and rage. “We’re running out of time.”

The knock came again, harder. We were out of time.

We couldn’t afford to get sloppy. “All we need is proper planning, Leo. Proper planning and precision. We don’t have the luxury of going in blind.” I nodded, the weight of the situation settling on my shoulders. "Fine. You’re right. We do this by the book." Turning to the tech guys, I spoke through clenched teeth. "We’ve got until midnight. That’s all we have. If you find anything useful, don’t waste time. Let me know immediately. They nodded, scurrying back to their computer.

I can’t even imagine driving a real one. We tried the next game on the ticket and that’s where we lost track of time. We were gearing up for laser tag when Ben's cellphone started to ring, I caught sight of the time on his phone. “It’s lunch hour! We are supposed to return before lunch hour.” I started taking off my gear and he followed suit. “Shit!” He agreed. “One of us should have kept track of time.” Despite being late, we still stopped for an ice cream because at that point, we were already late and panicking doesn’t slow down the time in anyway.

I fought the reflex to pull away. A few agonizing seconds passed, his fingers just a fraction too long. Satisfied, Adrian let out a soft breath, almost a sigh of resignation. Then he spoke. "We're running out of time," he whispered, his voice so low it was all but swallowed by the room. "She's not ready yet." My stomach churned in sickening convolutions. Who? Me? Not ready for what? I remained utterly still, racing heart pounding in chest so fiercely that I thought he must be able to hear it.

“Shift!” Guess we didn’t make it out before the run started.
