She turned to me, tears glistening in her eyes, “And what am I supposed to do Jeff? Pretend none of it happened? Pretend they didn’t destroy me?”
“No,” I said softly, “But maybe it’s time to stop letting them control your life. You’re stronger than this, Emma. Stronger than you think.”
Her breath hitched, and for the first time, I saw the cracks in her armor. She buried her face in her hands, and I didn’t hesitate to wrap an arm around her.
She cried then, deep, wrenching sobs that shook her small frame. I held her, offering the only comfort I could.
