She tells me enthusiastically, her little body bouncing around in my grasp. My widened eyes meet Derrick’s gaze over Hayden’s head, a question in their depths. As if sensing where my thoughts are headed, Derrick speaks before I can ask. “The pack breeds dogs in a large facility back behind the packhouse.” He smiles down at Hayden before asking, “Which one was your favorite?” A serious expression appears on Hayden’s angelic face as she thinks over Derrick’s question. “ I liked the wolf the best.” She says after a moment of thought, her eyes lighting up at the reminder of her favorite dog.

"I checked on Yule earlier, and he was fine! And Tracey only stopped by out of kindness. Yule was the one who kicked and hit Puffy—" "What?!" I snapped. "Yule is terrified of dogs! And you let Tracey bring one near him? Do you even have a conscience?!" Silence. I could almost hear the gears turning in Peter's head as he remembered: Yule was allergic to dog fur. That might've been why his condition had spiraled so quickly.

She grabbed some dog treats and approached him slowly. "Sweet little wolf, are you hungry?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly. Drex, sensing her anxiety, sat perfectly still. He put on a playful expression and wagged his tail, doing his best to appear harmless. "Oh, you’re so sweet!" the woman murmured. Without further hesitation, she reached out and stroked Drex’s head. Drex closed his eyes, leaning into the warmth of her gentle touch. "Eat up, little one. If you see someone bad, just run! Don't mind me—I'm old, but you still have your whole life ahead of you," she whispered as she pulled Drex into a soft embrace.

"Hey, do you want to get back at the man who hurt you?" Logan spat out a mouthful of blood and looked up at me with alarmingly bright eyes. "Yes." A vicious smile curled on my lips as I lazily tilted his chin up with the toe of my shoe. "Then become my lapdog, and I'll give you everything you want." Logan lowered his head and fell silent. Just as I grew impatient and was about to turn away, he reached out and grabbed my ankle. "Woof." From then on, Logan became my most devoted lapdog.
