Cerita ini mengambil seting masa revolusi industri Inggris pada masa Napoleon gencar menyuarakan revolusi Prancis, pada masa itu Inggris banyak kehilangan koloninya termasuk di Amerika yang menuntut kemerdekaan dan sekarang menjadi Amerika Serikat. Revolusi industri sempat mengakibatkan banyak polusi lingkungan di Inggris dan Scotlandia terutama Glasgow dan London.
