Pockets—the corgi-sized, Leonberger-furred, big-hearted hero of this tale. Saffron never even read the first line of her book, and her hot chocolate was cold the next time she looked at it. She awoke when her book fell to the floor with a bump. Her breathing was fast, and she had been dreaming of Jack, who seemed to have a huge dog, which was running around him as he held her in his arms. We feed him some chips and water. Maddy and I started calling him Tripod and decided we were taking him home today. We spent the next couple of hours playing with him in the bed of the truck while they finished the walls. Before we knew it, the guys were back and ready to go pick up the food. When I am taken on assignments, they bring a large dog crate, but it’s electrified. I tried to escape once and now I will live with the consequences for the rest of my life. He points to the car, and I walk to the door, getting back in. I look at the red wagon as we drive past it and wonder what Maddie is like today. Is she strong? Kind? Did she know we were coming? A fire truck races past us and my handler chuckles, “Poor kids.” He scoffs.

Adrienne declined. Renee and Brian approached the main entrance when their dog suddenly appeared, whimpering with excitement. Adrienne typically has a deep fear of dogs, but upon seeing this one, she felt an unusual sense of familiarity. As their eyes met, the dog abandoned Renee and Brian, retreating to a corner with a hint of fear. "Daisy," Adrienne whispered.

She can feel the heat on her face and could only hope that the night and the lights are dark enough to hide the scarlet on her cheeks. “We aren’t dating.” “Ah… not yet.” Daisy said. It was more of a statement than a question. “Not at all. I’m his assistant.” Eden confessed. Her heart sank as she said this. Daisy can hear. She might not be a wolf but her senses are still stronger than a normal human. She is still a Volkov after all.

The three wolves streaked through the graveyard, darting from shadow to shadow across the green grass, until they slipped into the suburban street. Across the road from Aislen’s house, a Bichon Frise being walked by a bored boy whose eyes were glued to his phone growled and barked, tugging on its leash, and snapping at the leaves that hid them, until Rhett revealed his teeth with a dark growl. The boy looked up, startled, but did not see them hidden in the bush. He tugged on the dog’s leash. “C’mon Butch, do your poo already so we can go home.”
