When some branches and leaves begin to rustle, we both snap our necks to see a squirrel jumping from one tree to another. My mate jumps like a spooked horse. Darting back, she braces her paws to defend herself. She starts howling again, but this time she doesn’t tilt her head back; she keeps it forward, making the sound distorted and rough. She repeats the action, her muzzle darting around, but this time the sound is full of panic and fear. She’s terrified. Shit.

Head resting on outstretched paws, apparently relaxed, Bear is doing his best impression of a fur rug, if rugs emanated a low continuous rumble, something along the lines of distant thunder. Will shifts and the rumble grows louder, the thunderstorm rolling overhead. A ridge of fur rises between Bear's shoulders and Will freezes once more. "Can you call your dog off, please." James' face cracks. He spins, sucking in his cheeks, then straightens his face and turns back. "Bear..." He snaps his fingers. "C'mon Bear. It's fine." The huge dog swings his head around, looking over one shoulder, disbelief radiating from every hair.

That's when I heard a dog growl. Why do I turn my head to see a sad Chihuahua? This breed of dog is the most annoying of all time. I try to quiet it down, but it starts barking again. "No, no, no, hush, quiet down" I was looking for a place to hide when I heard a small growl come from my backpack.

Celeste answered. Lux was struggling to hold back his change. The sound of his bones breaking ricocheted around the forest. Frightened birds and disturbed tiny creatures fled their outposts as the loud noise of cracking twigs echoed around the land. DJ gulped as he watched the big doggie disappear behind some thick bushes. The boy looked on with curiosity as the bushes swayed and rustled. But a part of him was terrified to follow the big doggie, his instincts told him something wasn't right.

A dog barks in the distance. My hackles stand on end as I crouch lower in the bushes. Relax, it’s too far away. It’s focused on something other than you. My nerves are on alert. Between creeping in the dark and the fact I’m about to face off with my enemy, my heart hammers at my rib cage like a piston in overdrive.

A bulging one. Sausage is a special dog though. He’s been there for me over the years. Like when I broke up with Sarah, he would just sit by my side and be there. It was like he sensed I was sad, and he wanted to help me feel better. “Should we take you out for a walk right now?” Stella asks the little guy. He barks in response, waddling his little legs around in excitement, his tail snapping between my two legs. “He’s more excited than I expected,” I say.

We just agreed to each other earlier not to lie and hide something. I chuckled humorlessly, even though the demons inside my stomach were already hollering at each other, causing me to get nuisance. I shook my head and then called his name until my throat dried. Bobby was also barking, looking for his Dad but no bail. I jerked when the thunder blasted out in the sky, making a clangorous noise startled beneath it. Bobby whimpered, then closed his ears using his paws. I carried him to stroke his fur, keeping him calm. Dogs have sensitive hearing, and it might cause stress to them. I wrapped Bobby between my arms and continued my search even though it was hopeless.

I ran into her arms, I had to console her, her crying was making the animals around us nervous. I whispered to her, asking what happened, and why the dog was vomiting foam. It's very unusual because she has all her vaccinations, and the vet knows the dog's medical history. "Shhh... Don't worry, she'll get better. You'll see that what happened is because she's a very restless animal. Wait here, I'll go in and ask about the dog." I didn't even have to get up because the doctor came to us and told us that the dog is fine, that tap water and the bag she ate caused many deadly symptoms. That means she's alive by a miracle.

There's no way I'm gonna accept dying like this. No! There's no freaking way that I'm gonna die like this but what should I do? Cuddle with it so it would let me go? This is not a normal dog. No dog can be this huge. All of a sudden, it let out a loud howling, followed by two far-stretched ones. I jumped at the sudden sound. What was that, a call but a call for what? Oh my God! Is it calling other rabies to come feast on me?

Purposeful. And then, a sound that stops my heart. Woof! Barking. Deep, aggressive, booming barking. The sound bounces off the stone walls, amplifying, distorting until it sounds like a beast from hell. Dogs. Ciro’s dogs. He didn't just send men. He sent the hounds. Dobermans trained to track a scent across a burning city. Dobermans that know the smell of my fear because they lived in the same house with it.
