A Reaper stepped through the portal opening. Tall, with ebony hair, he wore the long black cloak she expected to see, a scythe in his hand. The man quickly ran to the left of the portal, and then another Reaper appeared on his heels. Dressed identically, with the same weapon, he ran to the right. Then, another sprang forth, and another. Ru watched, her eyes wide as the Reapers continued to pour out of the portal, as if Hell had spilled an inkwell and the thick, black substance was covering the entire earth.

I decided that I wanted to become a reaper and not just a boring princess lounging at a palace waiting for my parents to wed me off to some pompous prince so I enrolled in the reapers training program, which I completed and am currently sitting with my best friend Jenna as we await receiving our own coveted satin reaper box that contains cards with information on who, where and why we're collecting, a pocket watch for getting the reaping done precisely on the right second and sheer gloves that allow us to walk among the humans. The sound of his boots faded down the hall. I pressed my back against the wall and slid to the floor. My body was still shaking. Not from fear. Or not only from fear. When his teeth had grazed my mark, something inside me had ignited. A heat that started at my neck and poured down through my chest, my stomach, my thighs. My skin had tightened. My breath had caught. And for one terrible, honest second, I had wanted him closer. The Reaper. The man who’d killed his own family. The man who collected territories like other men collected debts.

I froze, my breath caught in my throat as the pair of red eyes gleamed in the darkness. The presence lurking in the shadows sent shivers down my spine, and a sense of impending danger washed over me. I had stumbled upon something I shouldn't have, and now I had to face the consequences. "Who's there?" I repeated, my voice more firm this time, trying to hide the fear that threatened to consume me. But the figure remained silent, only the eerie red glow of its eyes piercing through the darkness.

In the center of the room was what appeared to be an altar made from black stone and marble with a single flame burning atop it. On either side of the altar were two reapers—one male and one female—dressed in matching black robes and hoods that covered their features from view except for their eyes which were a deep dark red color like blood. An archway stood offset the altar, leading to another room. The atmosphere in this chamber was one of torture and screams as if used for black magic and sacrifice. My body stays limp while my mind spirals in panic. We pass through the side door of the garage. The air smells of oil and concrete. The door creaks as it shuts, and the sound echoes in my head like a nightmare replaying in real time. My body bounces against the person’s shoulder with every step up the stairs, thud, thud, thud, and I can tell we’re inside now. The air is warmer, thicker.

The warehouse district smells like rust and decay and old nightmares. Shadows crawl across iron beams and broken windows. Cobwebs thick as curtains stretch between support columns. Something skitters in the dark; mice maybe, or rats, or worse. I used to be scared of places like this when I was a kid. Mom would tuck me in, tell me stories about the Grim Reaper hiding in shadows, waiting for bad children. Guess I was right to be scared. The reaper found me anyway. Married me. Fucked me in a van. Damon falls into step beside me, smirking. "You're really a whore, aren't you?"
