I asked with a slight smirk. She stood up, her chin raised high. “Get out,” she said simply. “Kiara..” I muttered but I stood up either way. She pushed me to the door and pushed me out with a hard look on her face. “As much as I want to help, there's nothing I can do. Stop looking for information. You'll put us all in trouble. I don't know who the reaper is…”, she said but something flashed briefly in her eyes. Fear.

She jumped up with a loud wail as she shivered, sweat dripping from her forehead. "No! Make it stop! Please!" She shouted. I pulled her towards me, "calm down! Calm down. It's just a dream. You're safe now. It was just a nightmare." I kept repeating the words and she cried on, I felt her pulse leap as fear surged through her entire body, and she panted heavily.

"Not only is she not dead, she is even hooked up with Jensen. She is a scourge, and eventually she is going to ruin you and Jensen, just as her mother ruined your father and your eldest uncle." The reaper moved even closer. "Erase it." Jennet took another step back and started to tremble in fear. “I-” "Let her keep it," a voice said. Jennet flinched and glanced. She gasped. The same man whom she met inside the store stood not far from her. She glanced back at the reaper who distanced itself from them.

Another reaper was already there—tall, cloaked, and walking toward the entrance with purpose. “Hey,” I called out, stepping in his path. “Who’s on your list tonight?” He glanced at me coldly. “None of your business,” he snapped. “You know the rules.” He moved past me and entered the bar. Straight into the same hallway. The same room. My pulse raced—something I hadn’t felt in years. Is this fear? “Let me take that soul for you tonight,” I offered, trying to steady my voice. He paused, amused. “You’re not thinking clearly, Cullen.”

They ran anyway, breathless though they didn’t need breath.

That night, I couldn't breathe. The walls were closing in. The air was too thick. Every shadow looked like the prison. Every silence felt like being consumed. I stumbled out of bed. Careful not to wake Grace sleeping beside me. Made it to the hallway before the panic fully hit. Couldn't breathe. Couldn't think. Couldn't— Strong arms grabbed me. Pulled me against solid chest. Liam raised his saddened gaze to Saraid’s adamant stare and a small grin adorned his face as he shook his head. “Of that I have no doubt that you would try, but Reaper I fear may be too strong to ignore. He has had a millennium to sharpen his skills and I fear I may just lose you to him. All of us could lose you to him.” Saraid felt a combination of fear and anger. She was afraid of what she felt and how helpless she was when faced with Reaper, but she was angry with Liam for not trusting their relationship enough to believe that she could withstand him. It was after all her thoughts of Liam, Treasa, and the others that brought her back from Purgatory and Reapers hold.
