Aurora POV The drive back home is silent, the kind of quiet that presses in from all sides, thick with everything we can’t say. Emmi is in the back seat, her little legs swinging, oblivious to the storm brewing between the adults. Lucas keeps his eyes on the road, his jaw tight, and I stare out the window, my mind racing. I walked over and gave Shane a hug then told him to go freshen up then we would go see Emma ourselves. While I was waiting for Shane, I pulled out this book and tried to write for a bit. He buried his face against Ember’s shoulder, clinging to her like a frightened child afraid she might disappear again. “I looked for you,” he murmured. “They said you went away… but you’re back now, right?” Ember stood stiffly, her hands frozen at her sides. Her first instinct was to push him away. But then she looked at his face.

But Emily noticed that he and the woman left separately, he went one way, she another. Suspicious, Emily thought. She stood, Nicole at her side. "We need to find out who that man is," she said quietly. Nicole nodded. "I'll have someone look into it." Emily looked toward the coffin one last time. Belin was dead. Geraldine was dying. Emilia was alone. Carl was broken. And she, well, she was still standing. Still fighting, winning. She turned away and walked into the fading light. The past was dead. But the war was far from over.
