Clara had turned twenty that year, and she'd insisted on a garden party even though it was barely spring and still cold enough to need blankets draped over the chairs.
“You didn't have to do all this,” she kept saying, over and over, to anyone who'd listen, even though she'd been the one who picked the flowers herself.
I found her by the fountain a little before the cake came out, sitting on the low stone edge with her shoes off, her feet dangling just above the water.
“You're going to catch a cold,” I told her, dropping down beside her.
“You sound like Dad.” She bumped her shoulder against mine. “Twenty feels strange, Kath. I don't feel any different than I did yesterday.”
