"Well, listen, sweetie, Richard is calling me over—we're taking a boat tour along the Amalfi coast in a few minutes," she said, her voice rushing with excitement. "I just wanted to check in and hear your voice. I'll send you a ton of photos later today, okay? I love you so much!"
"Love you too, Mom. Have fun," I replied softly.
The line went dead, the silence of the empty gym rushing back in to fill the space. I lowered the phone slowly, letting out a long, shuddering breath I didn't realize I'd been holding.
