I tell him as I smile. He sighs as his shoulders slump, “You are trusting me now, but the first rule is to stop trusting everyone and everything people say. This world will eat you alive.” I nod my head, I really didn’t know how not to trust someone. I have never been a cynical person and my dad was always worried about that. He tried his best to protect me but I had to step out someday. “And you have to stay away from Frank. Give me your word. I know you guys work together and he is your boss-”

She only stared at me as I wiped my face with the back of my hand and placed the cup back on the kitchen counter. Turning around, I placed my hand on the doorknob and was about to walk out when I felt I had to ask her. “Even if the proofs are against someone, would your gut feeling of somebody’s guilt or innocence be trustworthy enough? Would you listen to your head or your heart?” My question took Raine off guard and she took a moment to think. I waited patiently as she seemed to have come to a conclusion. “What you see in front of you is not always the entire truth, lily bro. Your gut feeling would almost be always correct even if your head says otherwise.”

I nodded, "Yeah, that's the feeling I got. But why would you be upset by your herbs?" "I don't know. Maybe I was upset by the reason why I needed to use them?" "I guess that could be it. But why?" "I don't know. But I hope we can figure it out before it gets to that." I nodded, she was right. But I was getting a feeling that it had something to do with me. Obviously, there was nothing concrete pointing to that aside from my gut instinct. But if there was anything I learned, it was that I should trust my gut.

I know I can be an easy target for deception, something Val used to always remind me of, but believe it or not, I’ve learned my lesson. To a large extent, I’ve managed to resist the temptation of trusting everyone I come across. I constantly remind myself that there are genuinely bad folks out there, and it’s totally fine to watch out for myself. It’s okay to question someone’s intentions, and it’s more than okay to say no if something doesn’t sit right with me.
