Sometimes you should go on your gut instinct; that little voice that tells you to tells you what your heart says. I have come to learn that if I have done something that does not feel right, then it ended up not being right. What else I have learned is not to trust another man around your wife, well, least of all one that she was married to. I suck at this whole giving advice thing. So, let’s just go with trust your gut. I know you feel that connection you have Craig. Trust that, lean into that, because something tells me that you two are going to need each other.” He stood to his feet dusting off the imaginary dust from his pants. “Our world is fucked up but Craig is one of the good ones.” And with that last word, he left, leaving me to my silence.

“Don’t trust anyone right away. And for gods’ sake, don’t fall for any charming bastards like Ash. They’ll promise you the world and offer you nothing.” “Hey,” I say, laughing. “Ash isn’t that bad.” Dad growls, “Maybe not anymore, but he used to be exactly that bad. Just ask your mother.” Mom brings the food over in dishes and plates, setting everything down with precise movements. A clear indication of how stressed she is. She chimes in calmly. “You should trust your intuition, Scar. If something feels wrong, it probably is. Don’t let anyone talk you out of what you know. Always trust yourself.”

But is he for real or is this just an elaborate act? Everything seemed incredibly real at the crash site and last weekend. He resonates powerfully with me, but I don’t know if I’m merely projecting my vibes onto him, seeing and feeling what I want to because I want him so much. I used to be able to trust my gut but how can I anymore when my gut failed to warn about the secrets Yacine revealed? It was like getting sucker punched followed by a swift kick in the teeth. “Because you are ready. Both of them will collaborate and make sure you are safe. I just don’t want you to push yourself and blindly trust their decision. It is your body and you know best what you can and can’t handle.” I stared at him, wide-eyed. “Why didn’t all of you say that before? Before I started?” I asked nervously. “Because you didn’t trust yourself at that point. Now, it is imperative that you trust your body and your gut.” He paused and patted me on the back. “We didn’t want you to second guess yourself. Besides, we are all there to take control if anything went wrong. Meredith and Duncan won’t put you in any situation that they didn’t think you could control.”

I was totally at unease about his well-being, making me bothered that I might have landed him in a terrible situation. Still, I had to focus on the fact that I have little trust in Garrett’s claims. It might have a lot of truth but I am not sure what to believe right now. “My guts still do not conform with you being here,” I tell him. “I think you are here for something more than trying to help me. Help that I am not sure on what it is going to lead to,”

But it feels right. “I made him stay with me.” I realize how stupid it sounds the second it leaves my mouth. The male scoffs, smiling wickedly. “Damien here doesn’t do anything he doesn’t want to.” He pauses for dramatic effect. “And I doubt a little thing like you could make anybody do anything.” “I wouldn’t be so sure,” I shoot back. Is it safe to push buttons I have no reason for pushing? Probably not. His face turns to stone, and I fear I’ve made a mistake, but I steel my spine, ready for what comes next.

“Because I’m starting to see you’re not such a bad person after all. I mean you wouldn’t do all this if you were, right?” I scoffed. “You should learn to trust no one but yourself and your instincts,” I mumbled, picking up my glass and taking a sip of the wine, all the while aware of her curious gaze on my face. “My instincts? Why?” Setting down the glass, I threw my head back and pushed my fingers through my hair in frustration. “Because you should, unless you’re willing to learn the bad way.” The chair scraped backward as I pushed to my feet. “And what are your instincts telling you right now, Iris?”

He doesn’t even look at me as he stumbles out of the room like a drunk man, the moment we just shared lost in the wind. And I have no words to tell myself as I leave the room minutes later, everything back in place. I don’t bother finding Dan to ask any questions or pay for more time. Just walk straight to my car which I kept two blocks away to avoid suspicion, my mind a blank space. I wait until I’m sitting safely inside the car to bring my phone out and type a single question.
