I finally got around to reading 'Tales from a Not-So-Perfect Pet Sitter' last weekend, and it's basically total chaos from the start. Nikki's supposed to be watching this super fancy, prize-winning show cat named Miss Penelope for a neighbor, but of course it immediately goes wrong—the cat escapes. The whole book is this frantic scramble to find the cat before the owners get back, with Nikki dragging Chloe and Zoey into the mess.

What I liked was how the pet-sitting disaster collides with everything else in her life, like the big dance at school and her ongoing stress about Brandon maybe moving. There’s a pretty funny subplot involving MacKenzie trying to one-up her with a dog, and the usual diary entries and doodles make the panic feel real. It all wraps up in that classic, slightly over-the-top Dork Diaries way where everything sort of works out, but you’re left wondering how the school isn’t just a pile of rubble by now.

I'm thrilled to say there are currently 15 books in the main series. Each one is packed with Nikki Maxwell's hilarious middle school adventures, doodles, and drama. The series kicks off with 'Tales from a Not-So-Fabulous Life' and goes all the way to 'Dork Diaries 15: Tales from a Not-So-Posh Paris Adventure.' Plus, there are a few spin-offs like the 'How to Dork Your Diary' guide and the 'O.M.G. All About Me Diary!' which add even more fun to the collection. The books are perfect for anyone who loves a mix of humor, heart, and relatable chaos.

I gave up after book six, so I was skeptical picking this one up for my niece. Honestly, it felt like more of the same – Nikki’s school dramas, her crush on Brandon, the mean girl MacKenzie causing trouble. The formula works for kids who are already hooked, but if they’re getting a bit older or restless, it might not hold them. The art and diary format are still fun, but the stakes feel repetitive.

That said, my niece (she's nine) devoured it in an afternoon and immediately asked for the next one. For the target audience, it’s clearly a hit. It’s a safe, familiar read that doesn’t try to be more than it is. I’d say it’s worth it if your kid is deep into the series, but maybe not the book to start with if they’re new to it.
