The doctor begins to lead the way, and I'm about to follow when Tatum holds onto my arm.
"Can't I come?" she asks me, looking worried and broken, with dried tears on her face.
"Stay here while I talk to him. Stay with Dotty. She might wake up soon." That calms her down, and she nods, letting go of me.
My conversation with the doctor gives me insight into Dorothy's condition, and sure enough, it's a common case of neglected health. She has diabetes, and it has progressed too far.
