Mirae whispered urgently, her hand clutching mine.
I glanced over my shoulder. The driver hadn’t pulled away yet. Without thinking, we bolted back toward the taxi and yanked the doors open.
The driver stared at us in disbelief. “Back so soon?”
“Please, just drive!” Mirae begged, her voice cracking.
“To where?” he asked, bewildered, as hands pounded against the windows.
“Anywhere!” I shouted.
He didn’t argue. The car jerked forward, leaving the noise and flashing screens behind.
For a while, the driver just drove in silence, the only light coming from the pale moon above us. My head leaned against the window again, watching the empty road blur past. My body felt heavy, drained from everything
