The dual element wielder gathered her magic to her feet letting her stand firmly on the ground despite the shaking of the earth. When the dragon emerged from the forest, Sophia was beyond awestruck. The only dragons she had ever met was Elijah and Gregory. And yet they were tiny compared to this one. Where Elijah was black and the epitome of darkness and fire itself, this dragon’s scales were elegant and shimmering in gold under the rays of the sun. It halted a few feet in front of her with its golden eyes seemed to bore into her soul. ‘Lady Sophia Laera,” a male voice boomed coming from the dragon.

The ground cracked beneath him. Before he could recover, three more creatures burst through the fractured sky. Then five. Then twelve. Their shrieks echoed across the kingdom. The dragons answered with thunderous roars as they took to the air. Within moments, the peaceful valley had become a battlefield. Massive dragons clashed with creatures born from darkness. Fire lit the heavens. Explosions rolled across the mountains. Smoke swallowed the horizon. Elara refused to remain on the ground. She raised both hands, and silver-violet light spread beneath the feet of the advancing monsters.

“That’s your ‘safe point’?” The silver dragon let out a tiny belch of smoke. “You’re welcome.” “I’m confused,” Candy muttered, arms crossed. “Who are you people?” “I’m Selra,” said the white witch. “And I’m Velra,” added the black witch. “We’re the Veil-Twins,” they said in eerie unison. “I’m Pyrion,” the dragon yawned, curling into Haunter’s lap more tightly. “Dragon of the Spiral Flame. But you can just call me Pyr.”

“I’m not sure how much it’s going to help us, though.” “What was it?” Leesa asked. “What did you remember?” “Dragons. Lamashtu once feared dragons.” “Dragons vanished eons ago,” Dominic said, shaking his head in resignation. “They were creatures of a long dead age.” “Maybe we can find some dragon eggs somewhere,” Ralin suggested enthusiastically. “Then we could hatch ’em, like in Game of Thrones.” He frowned as a sobering thought struck him. “It might take a while for baby dragons to grow powerful enough to challenge a demon, though.”

Leila put a handful of glistening ashes from the well in Mother Dragon’s palm, “These are for you.” Mother Dragon teared up. She hugged Leila and kissed her cheek. “Do what you must now, and I’ll be here waiting for you. We have so much to talk about,” she said, while brushing her warm thumb across Leila’s forehead. “May I ask… what does the word ‘Slathar’ mean?” Leila said inquisitively. Mother Dragon smiled. “Slathar is the name for lightning, the gift bestowed from the sky, in an ancient dragon tongue. You are meant to be the queen of the dragon realm. All of the dragon spirits were calling out to you.”

She read aloud: “Where one flame rises, another stirs. The second heart wakes in silence, drawn to the first.” Kai straightened. “A second Dragonheart? I thought it was only ever one.” “So did we,” Mistara said quietly. “But the scroll says otherwise.” Rowan stared at the words, her stomach tightening. “If there’s another like me… why now? Why wake at the same time?” Mistara looked troubled. “Because two Dragonhearts appearing together means imbalance. Chaos. It has only happened once before—and it ended with kingdoms burning.”

The two dragons bellowed and cried out, pleading in their own way for me to let them in. In the middle of the night, something slides past my protections. Hands move across my skin, enticing me to slip into the other plane. The dragons soon join in; I’ve grown tired of calling them the dragons or beasts, so I have named them. Guðmundur, Magnus’ dragon, whispers softly and I find myself falling deeper into the vision. Soon, Ragnvaldr, Bjorn’s beast, joins in.

Her head span as she fought to keep her eyes open, blinking back black spot, all the while wondering what could have brought on the feeling. Two Dragons appeared out of nowhere, fighting each other in midair. Teeth and claws slashing and biting, while shooting green lightning and red fireballs. Catori laid on the freezing ground, shivering, staring at the sky. She watched while the two beasts clashed. Seeming to move impossibly fast, unaware of her down below, watching them. They disappeared just as quickly as they appeared, forgetting that they weren’t to be seen out in the open with the potential of exposing themselves to the humans.

Telagus roared, losing the calm composure he had previously, quickly closing his eyes and taking in a deep breath a second later in an attempt to prevent anger from overtaking his thoughts. “Very well, slow and painful it is then,” Fafnir growled happily, inhaling deeply before opening his mouth to allow green flames to pour out, swallowing Telagus. “No!” Rector yelled, reaching his hand out when he saw Fafnir engulf his wife’s body in dragon fire, he knew it would destroy Telagus, but also his wife as well. Once Fafnir stopped his cone of flames, a large cloud of black smoke floated away, revealing charred blackened sand and dirt, with Telagus still standing before them, smiling.
