“She’s staying here.” “I would like to see—” Rei released my hand and lifted his bourbon. “Check it out and come back,” he said to Em. “She’s safe sitting here with me.” “Jasmine?” Em asked. I shook my head. “I’m happy here.” After Em walked away, Rei turned toward me. “Are you?” “That was my question. Am I safe with you?” For the first time since we’d left the penthouse, a smile curled his lips. “You’re safe from other monsters.” My quickened pulse returned. “Other monsters? Are you a monster? Is Em?”

Then he contacted him. “Bacchus.” Minotaur said. Bacchus put his hand on his earpiece to hear him clearer. “Yes?” “Black Dragon and his company are all awake. We can’t ambush them.” Minotaur reported. Yeah. And you already alerted them with your shot. Bacchus irritatingly thought. “Standby. Pegasus is telling Cupid to hack this f*cking electric fence!” Bacchus ordered Minotaur. “Copy.” Minotaur answered.

I hate the look of my muscles all tense and stitched tight on my back. A lifetime of blows and bouncing back collects scars. I've had a lot of scalding showers, and bruises have become stretched and angry on me, causing pitted scars. There are no tears, but the groans come in multitude. As a monster, you learn never to accept pain. Pain only affects you if you let it. Black slacks. Black socks. Charcoal shoes are polished until they look like a crisp new apple skin. The shirt is deep forest green, which brings out the natural multiple hues of green in my eyes. Intentional. Gold flecks are juxtaposed in my iris.
