Dallas says before she sits down on my lap again. Quinlan has grabbed a tablet from the desk and I see him typing on the display. It takes a few moments before he starts smiling and hands the tablet to Darius, before he walks out of the Beta office. After he has returned, the four of us are reading through the book and it surprises me that this book is even in the digital archive. “There is a chapter on an underage or untrained King or Queen on page twelve, it isn’t in the index though.” Dallas says and she starts to read it out loud.

“Have you found anything?” “No.” Trisha replied. “Just this book that appears to be big and old,” Dalett said. “Did you just say old?” Jade inquired. Dalett nodded, and Jade rushed over to her. “Give me that book.” Dalett bent down, lifted the book, and set it on the table. The dust was so thick that the girls started coughing. Jade covered her nose with one arm and dusted the book with the other. “Let’s see what we can come up with inside there.” Jade flipped open the cover, which was rather heavy. She was surprised when she could not find anything. As she began flipping through the papers one by one, her gaze met the rest of them.

The book is massive, easily over two thousand pages, the weight of it pulling at my arms. Of course it’s this complicated. I bite back my frustration, reminding myself that this might be the only chance I have to get answers. I carry the book to an alcove, the leather seat creaking as I lower myself into it. The book lands on the desk with a soft thud, dust rising around it in a lazy cloud. The first page is brittle, the ink faded, but I manage to make out the opening line as I try carefully not to tear the paper:

DARIUS’S POV The book kept flipping, the heavy vellum pages rustling like dry, dead leaves caught in a winter storm. The sound was deafening in the white chamber, a frantic snap-snap-snap that made the hair on my arms stand up and stay there. Venus watched the blurring paper with a look of calm, hungry satisfaction, as if every single second was unfolding exactly the way she had planned for three hundred years. To her, we weren't people; we were just the latest set of numbers to be crunched in her eternal ledger.

Diana Edric opened the book and we peeled through the contents of the pages at the same time. But being a faster reader than I was, I was only able to scrape through words. While he, desperate for answers, turned the pages faster than my eyes could keep up with. At the end of it, though, he closed the book and looked up with a sigh of disdain. “What…what was it?” I asked, mental fingers crossed that it wasn’t anything overly disappointing. To give me an answer, he had to adjust his seat and take a deep breath.

I pressed my palms against the cover and let my mind sink into the silence, into my own pulse. I pictured hinges groaning, pages fluttering. The book shuddered. Heat flared beneath my hands. My eyes flew open. It opened. Pages ripped themselves free, fluttering until one stopped in the center. The world held its breath. My chest hammered so loud I thought the lantern would shatter; the letters on the page pulsed under my palms like a second heartbeat:

“Well, literally, the woman led astray. It’s based on Alexander Dumas’s book, La Dame aux Camelias.” I opened the strange book Roxy gave me. It was torn from several places, most of its pages were unrecognizable, it was all tattered and torn but some of its pages were still intact. From the first look of it I can tell it was more than hundred years old. Roxy handled it with care as I can clearly saw how she had tried to bind it. I flipped through the pages. I can’t understand anything as expected. After I turned to the twenty page, I saw a white page stapled with the main page of the book. my first guess was that it was Roxy’s writing.
