I climbed up and watched as the guys did too. They stood beside me panting. "I'm never coming to this place ever again. First scary monsters and now a bear, count me out next year," Drake panted, holding his knees. "Are you OK?" Kenneth asked me. "OK! There's a bear in our freaking campsite, if you didn't notice!" I clung for dear life on one of the huge dark branches. The damp, rough bark irritated my palms, but what could I do? It was either that or a one-way ticket to heaven.

It was of course a vampire themed carnival. The image or mascot of this carnival was a bear. This bear was an angry/grumpy looking bear giving off an evil grin of two-toned various colors. The difference with this bear was that it had fangs and claws to match the theme of the carnival. The two girls had waited a long time for the carnival hoping it would come to town. The carnival would visit various places once, then go on to the next. It was a one-night carnival. They could not pass it up.

His hair was dark as pitch, his build monstrous, muscles coiled with unnatural power. Around his neck hung a black jade pendant carved with jagged symbols that seemed to drink the light. His violet eyes swept the arena like a predator measuring the size of its prey. “I am the Dreadlord,” he announced, voice echoing with layered resonance, as though more than one being spoke at once. “You may call me nothing else.”

He turned to head to the forest, where he no longer saw DYLAN and the other bear. Suddenly, someone was biting him on the arm, digging needle-sharp claws into the back of his neck. TALEN roared in fury. He reached over his shoulder and managed to grasp a hold of the other bear’s head. The anger burning inside him made the decisions for him at this point. He wasn’t giving the guy another chance.

Tears overflowed my eyes. “Then tell me who’s hurting you, Spade.” The sudden tone change startled me. “I don’t know. A monster.” I covered my face. “I’m scared. Please, come and help me.” “Do you want this to end?” The voice hardened. “Yes.” “Then answer me honestly, Spade. No more lying.” She sounded angry now. “I swear I’m not lying. It’s a man without a face. A tall man with a tattoo of a snake on his right hand. He’s scary. His eyes are red. He’s a monster. Please, help me.”

The insects had stopped their chirping, and the wind had died down to a stagnant breath. From the darkness of a hollowed-out oak, two glowing, amber eyes ignited. It wasn't a wolf. It was a Scourge-Bear—a creature corrupted by the dark magic that bled from the Shadow Packs to the north. It stood eight feet tall, its fur matted with a black, oily substance that smelled of rot.

“Mom, Dad, meet Boulder Bear. I spent a fortune to hire this big man for my protection. He costs, like, a few million dollars! But he more than makes up for it with his sheer might and skills. Like, he once fought a godd*mn brown bear in the forest with his own fists, completely topless, and won! Beating up this pipsqueak? Piece of cak—” Boom. It sounded like a big bag of concrete had just plummeted to the spot next to her. Dust was kicked up into the air, creating a frenzy due to the disturbance and choking the daughter. She sputtered to recover, but the shock and disbelief in her features remained the same. Boulder Bear was lying flat on the ground. Was he dead? He looked dead to her!

Only a few things excited him. “Don't you see?” the deer said. “A storm is coming. You better return home,” the deer disappeared in the bush. The bear stood up. He turned his head, on the other side of the forest; the rain was already falling. The bear went his way. A thunderbolt danced across the sky. He quickened his peace. The bear stopped in front of his cave. He saw footprints that weren't his. “Someone,” the bear said in a low voice, “is in my cave.” The bear's face changed. He was more than angry.

He stepped forward, silent and controlled, his breath even. The mansion was secured—no one got in without his knowing. And yet, the unpredictability of the moment sent a dark thrill curling through his chest. The doorknob was cool under his fingers as he slowly pushed the door open. And what he saw— Was not at all what he expected. A scene straight out of a surreal, fucking fever dream. There she was. His Mini bear. Lounging in a massive tub, buried in a sea of white foam and soft steam, utterly oblivious to the fact that just seconds ago, he had been prepared to pull the trigger on an intruder.
