She was talking about that really odd dream I’d had not long ago, when I’d allegedly stood up and spoke in my sleep, saying something really weird about the time. I didn’t remember doing that, and I didn’t remember much of the dream, but she seemed to think it meant something. “How could other Vampires know anything about my dream?”

Then there were the fangs and the biting— Yeah—how high school is it to have dirty dreams about a vampire? To hell with it, because in these dirty dreams, Gaia had the best sex she'd ever had. It had gotten so bad, that on nights she didn't dream of him, she'd lie in bed using all her might to conjure his spirit. When these dreams did happen, Gaia could not control them. She always woke the next morning, sometimes sore, in her bed, alone, and fully clothed in pajamas that she never remembered putting on.

It was even harder for her to believe that Jacob was a vampire when she had never seen him drink human blood, nor had he attempted to suck her blood even though Claire had been alone with him several times. Jacob said that he eats in people's dreams. And that sounded a lot crazier. Food for the astral vampires was human blood energy and the way they eat was through human dreams. Did that make any sense? Of course not! Prayers were food for the souls. Religiously, she believed that. But the dream is impossible to be food for any creature. Dreams were made by the subconscious, especially if a person thinks hard. It's not like Jacob says that they can enter human dreams.

I waved my hand and raced as fast as I could. The scent was definitely getting stronger as I neared my home. What was she doing there? I had been dreaming about her a lot lately. And every dream ended with me sinking my teeth into her neck, making her bleed. What the hell was I? A vampire? Those sharp canines weren't mine.

I say finally, “but wake me if anything happens.” She nods, her expression softening just a fraction. “I will.” I peck her lips and then find a spot near the fire, sinking down onto the cold ground. The crackling flames cast a warm glow, but it does little to ease the chill that’s settled deep within me. I close my eyes, letting the sounds of the camp lull me into a restless sleep. But sleep doesn’t bring peace. In my dreams, I’m back on the battlefield, surrounded by the bodies of fallen warriors. The smell of blood fills my nose, thick and metallic. Shadows move at the edges of my vision, dark shapes with gleaming red eyes. The vampires are there, lurking, watching, waiting.
