You're gonna relapse." I handed him the money. "Wow, a drug deal with a moral conscience. How poetic." He laughed and handed me what I wanted. It was the only thing that could settle my spiraling thoughts and provide respite from the constant heaviness and tightness in my heart.

Shadows that felt like they were crawling toward me… suffocating me. I didn’t want night to come. Because night meant he would return. And with him… those papers. That deal. That cruel demand. And maybe this time, I wouldn’t have the strength to say no. The thought made my stomach churn harder than hunger ever could. I got up and paced the room, checking every corner again, even though I already knew it was useless. The door was locked. The windows were too high, too narrow to fit through. No phone, no bag, no way to call for help. He had planned this perfectly... like a hunter setting a trap.

Things were pretty good for the next eight months or so, I lost a couple fights, but I won about a dozen. Truth be told, you can’t run drugs if they’re running you. You can’t be a dealer if you’re a buyer. You can’t be a boss if you’re at the mercy of anyone—or anything.” She held my gaze like she was enraptured in it. “But that experience has been essential to my profession now. I know how my dealers think. I know how my buyers think. I can tell the dif
