It was better than waiting. Once again, Beth was amazed at the size and beauty of Carlisle Crest. The hall was long and well-lit. A red rug ran its entire length as far as she could see. A couple of portraits decorated the walls by the door of the salon they had been in. In one, she saw the portrait of the Dowager Duchess holding the hand of a young boy. It had to be the Duke. He was smiling.

Cassian cut down an assassin who lunged too close, his blade flashing like silver fire. Another serpent charged at me, dagger raised. I twisted aside, seizing his wrist and driving his own blade into his chest with cold precision. He crumpled at my feet, his blood soaking into the dust. Gasps rippled through the crowd. Daphne withdrew from the area and rushed towards Nicole as she drove her sword through the duchess’ chest with a furious cry. The duchess cried out and choked. Nicole shoved her off her sword with a foot in her chest and severed her head from her shoulders before her body could hit the ground. Dark blood splattered across the ground as she turned towards John who looked on the edge of hysteria before he scrambled to his feet and ran. Daphne rushed after him, skidding to a halt and aiming her sword’s end at him. He skidded to a stop just beyond the edge of her blade.

She promised. After dinner, Marguerite found herself engaged in a lively conversation with the duchess. Two maids pull me over and make me lie on my stomach, the process is repeated and I yelp, jumping up from the cushion and a few maids find it hard to stifle their laughs.
