The shit smelled like fucking months-old pan drippings, and it took everything I had not to rub it off of my skin the second he left the room. After my check-up, I'd been upgraded from broth to something more substantial—broth with some rock-hard baked puck of bread that Oliver explained was a ship's biscuit. The thing had to be submerged and left in the broth to soften for at least a minute before it was even remotely edible. But I thought about the time my dad made me eat a cricket for the protein, and found that the ship's biscuit wasn't quite as bad as that. So I ate it without complaint.

Now, he stood in the kitchen with a spatula in hand, happily cooking for her every single day. Nicole was clearly the one in control of this relationship. Still, watching Zeph willingly bend for the woman he loved didn't make him seem weak at all. If anything, it made him look even more reliable. As the conversation continued, the topic eventually shifted to the highly accomplished rabbit army. Then Hughie suddenly asked a dangerous question. "Hey... "These giant cockroaches are mutating and reproducing way too fast, and they're crawling around in literal garbage heaps. They're covered in bacteria and viruses.

Turo finished. Nik let me go, I sucked in huge breaths as I rubbed my throat. "Why the fuck do you call her that? She's not some annoying chirpy insect." Turo smiled. "There are certain species of female crickets who cannibalize their mates during sex. Ryker once said that Nik eats men for breakfast." He wiggled his eyebrows. Nik stomped around the back of the couch. "That's why you call me cricket?" She slapped at his chest.

Scott didn't reply and just continued crawling. "You know, this one time I had a pet gecko. He was a weird white colour, it kind of made him look transparent. I had to catch bugs for him to eat. Like crickets or muggies, oh that's a fruit fly by the way. They like the size of you but have wings. Maybe you've met one?" Still no reply. He didn't even stop to show he was listening to me.
