I listened to the sounds of cabinets opening and closing, the sizzle of something hitting a hot pan, and soon the smell of bacon started to fill the air, followed by eggs and toast. When he emerged a few minutes later, he was carrying two plates loaded with food. Scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, sausages, and buttered toast. He set one in front of me along with a glass of orange juice, then took the seat across from me with his own plate and a protein shake. “Eat,” he commanded. “Jace,” I sighed, “I’m really not hungry—” “I don’t care.” He picked up a piece of bacon and bit into it. “You’re eating anyway.”

I smiled, “You got it.” I went to the kitchen and pulled out sausage and eggs. I looked in the freezer and smiled when I found some of mom’s homemade biscuits. I pulled out a bag of those and preheated the oven. I arranged a bunch on a sheet pan and started cooking the sausage. When the sausage was done, I poured some of the fat out of the pan, scooped the sausage out, then made a rue with the fat that I left in the pan. I then poured in milk and whisked it smooth. I left that long enough to pop the sheet pan of biscuits in the oven, then went back to whisking the gravy until it was thick enough for biscuits and gravy. Joseph grabbed himself a plate and then handed me one as well. I smiled my thanks to him, trying not to let him see my utter nervousness. Looking at the food, I was amazed by how good it looked. There was every kind of breakfast food imaginable. Scrambled eggs, pancakes, waffles, French toast, sausage, bacon, fruit salad, a bowl of regular fruit, grits, oatmeal with a variety of toppings, there was even an omelet station where a chef was making omelets on the fly. There was so much more that I could hardly wrap my head around.

“You can take another two aspirin. It’s been long enough since the last two, and drink some more water. Dad made his special breakfast since Mom stayed up for us.” I helped Sarina pull Kimia up and we went down to the kitchen. Mr. Graycort makes an amazing breakfast. He does this casserole type thing with eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, cream of mushroom soup, and cheese. He mixes it all up in a bowl, then dumps it into a cake pan, bakes it until it’s set, then covers it in more cheese. It is heaven in a pan. It’s also not meant for people on a low fat diet. “I don’t know if my stomach can handle it,” Kimia whispered.

I stand up, and when I get to the kitchen, there is a spread of a little of everything. Baked beans with mushrooms, sausages, piled toast, scrambled eggs, mince, burger patties, bacon, sliced tomatoes, fried chips, onion rings, sliced fruit, plain yogurt, and berries. Then there was three types of cereal and two liters of freshly squeezed orange juice and a line of assorted teabags.

Now, it housed us. Breakfast was my favorite meal to cook for because there was such variety in it. Sweet, fruity, salty, savory. It was an endless list. We had not done breakfast burritos yet, so hopefully they liked it. I grabbed some vegetables, eggs, sausage, bacon, and tortilla wraps. I was looking forward to this too because I had not made it in a few years.

I look over at the bed and see a hoodie, t-shirt, jeans and underwear layed out neatly. "Oh, thank the goddess." I think aloud, incredibly thankful to have some clean clothes to wear. My eyes widen at the selection before me, "Did I do good?" He asks,

"Probably the Country skillet. I'm debating whether or not I should get a side of grits. Are you sure that's all you want? You can order whatever and as much as you want." "Well, I guess I'll have a side of fruit as well." I smiled at her as she looked over the menu one last time. Then came the annoying voice. "Alright, have you decided?" Once again, her back was faced toward Daphnie. This was aggravating me. "Daphnie?" I asked. "I will have the two egg breakfast, scrambled, biscuits in gravy, and bacon als-" "Got it. What about you, sir?" The waitress said. "She wasn't done ordering," I said, gritting my teeth.

It had been a long time since I'd felt this way......the last time was on the day my parents were involved in that fatal accident. I just hope nothing goes wrong today. I wandered into the kitchen and set about preparing breakfast for myself.I whipped up a hearty breakfast of golden fried eggs, crispy bacon, sizzling sausages, baked beans, grilled tomatoes, sautéed mushrooms, and perfectly toasted bread. Before I knew it, I was absentmindedly whistling around the kitchen.
