It peeked out from the edge of his open shirt, catching a flicker of moonlight. I slowed down. “Where’d you get that?” I asked, nodding toward it. Silas paused. His face didn’t change much, but I saw something flicker behind his eyes. A shadow, maybe. “That?” he said, wiping sweat from his brow and glancing down. “Got that when I was exiled.” I blinked. “Looks bad. Must have hurt.” “Pretty bad,” he replied, his voice quiet but steady. “Happened long before you were even born. I crossed the wrong line, made the wrong enemies… ended up barely surviving the first winter.”
