As Officer Johnson, Officer Smith, Officer Noah, the receptionist, and Alice stepped into the elevator, the receptionist promptly pressed the button for the 16th floor. Even if the world had gone to hell and zombies roamed everywhere, there was no way ghosts were suddenly a thing.

The wood dissolved into light, and we stepped into another world. It was a cottage. Not the P*******t-fantasy kind. A real one, tucked inside the palace bones like the universe had hidden an entire fairytale here for emergencies.

Kael stood at the precipice of the Resonance Chamber, the literal heart of the Aetheric Elevator. It was a cathedral of glass and light, where the violet-gold Umbilical beam was focused into a coherent stream of energy. Here, the laws of physics were not just observed; they were enforced. The gravity was a perfect 1.0 G, the temperature a steady 20°C, and the air was filtered to a purity that made Kael’s lungs ache for the soot of the Rust-Hallows.

It turns out Dezra was a lazy bum and had an elevator installed that only goes to the Beta floor. Yeah, that’s correct.
