Elliott leads me toward our SUV, the sound of his hurried footsteps echoing against the pavement.
I don’t stop crying, even as he opens the door and helps me inside. The cool blast of air conditioning hits my skin, contrasting against the warmth of my tears.
Elliott sighs and pulls out my handkerchief, dabbing at my damp cheeks. His movements are firm but careful, as if scolding me through action alone. With his other hand, he pulls out his phone, tapping the screen rapidly.
