The first thing Emma noticed when she woke up was the silence.
She blinked, adjusting to the dim light filtering through her small window. The soft hum of early morning traffic was faint, like the world hadn’t fully woken up yet. She sat up slowly, her body still sore in places, but better. The burn on her abdomen ached faintly, wrapped carefully under her shirt.
She glanced at the clock. 6:07 a.m.
Her heart fluttered nervously. It was her first day back at the café. A place that, despite everything, felt more like home than this mansion ever did.
