Ember Academy
A sound echoed somewhere below them, footsteps, slow and deliberate, climbing the spiral stair.
Oren went rigid. "Someone's coming."
"I thought you said the second watch wasn't due for another hour."
"It isn't." His voice had dropped to barely a whisper, urgent now, eyes scanning the shelves for anywhere to hide the book, anywhere to hide themselves. "Which means whoever that is isn't here on the academy's business."
The footsteps grew closer, unhurried, confident in a way that guards on a routine patrol never quite managed, and Sera's stomach dropped as she recognized the rhythm of them a half second before a shape rounded the spiral stair into the dim light of the reading room.
