“Boring.” Ember gasped dramatically, clutching her chest painfully. “Take that back right now.” Piper leaned back defensively. “Sorry, Ember, but it’s true.” Before Ember could retaliate, Piper’s phone buzzed in her lap. She glanced down, muttering under her breath, “Books and novels really aren’t that interesting—” “—as bookworms make them out to be,” a voice finished smoothly. “Exactly!” Piper concurred, still trying to fetch out her phone. She froze up when she realized that the voice did not belong to Ember.

The night went still again. Ember stood there for a long moment,cold and shaking, feeling all the rises from her skin, she pressed her hand against the window glass. Recalling the words again “He’s not gone”. The words echoed in her head over and over until her pulse began to hit painfully against her ribs.
