Emily’s breath caught. He opened it. Two rings nestled inside—simple platinum bands. One plain. The other set with a single emerald, deep green, almost black in the low light. “No diamond,” he said. “Diamonds are expected. Predictable. This is… different.” Emily stared at the emerald. It reminded her of storm-tossed seas—beautiful, dangerous, untamed. She held out her hand.

"Marvin! Cannables!" In an instant, he head the crew load and aim one of the canons towards the beach. Kiera and Shane dove into the water and swam for the ship. Once they reached it, they turned in time to see the canon knock them over like bowling pins. They climbed aboard her ship and she ordered them anchored so The Emerald could come alongside. The bright blue ocean color of it made her smile brightly. “Jack, it's beautiful.” She whispered looking at it. “You like it?” He asked, his voice sounding a little vulnerable. “Like it? I love it!” She said, jumping into his arms. He caught her laughing. “Was the mermaid angry? Should I expect her to plot revenge against me?” She laughed. “No but it is called the mermaid's treasure. It's called aquamarine. It means good luck, fearlessness, and protection to sailors.” He whispered to her as he touched the stone.

Dustin said flatly. With a deep breath, Irene finally opened the pouch. In an instant, a brilliant green light shot out. Irene paused for a second before carefully pulling out the object inside. It was a Verdigris Emerald, as large as a goose egg. Even under the dazzling lights of the evening, the green glow it emitted was almost blinding. Aaron and Phoebe stood frozen in shock. “Is... is that a Verdigris Emerald? A piece this big?” someone stammered in disbelief.

He said next, brushing off the previous subject. The crashing sound of the waves was loud. I looked down hesitantly. There were several rocks that rose out of the water, the water around it white with foam. The vision of the water was blurry when something green hung in front of my eyes. I took a step back and took in the thing that Adrian held in front of me. The big green emerald caught the sun and shone light green beams around us. "What's this?" I asked him, even though I already knew.

The ballroom was a sea of shimmering silk and low, quiet murmurs. Thousands of crystals in the chandeliers caught the light, but the heaviest thing in the room was resting right against my neck. The "Cursed" Emerald felt unnaturally cold. It was a dark, deep green that seemed to drink in the light rather than reflect it. Every time I passed a mirror, I caught a look at myself. I looked powerful, but I felt like I was standing on a trapdoor.
