CHAPTER FIFTEEN In Lucas’ bedroom, Emily was sitting in a big armchair, finishing off her fourth jumbo cookie, eyes transfixed on the nautical map on the screen of her laptop. She chewed thoughtfully as a ship-shaped cursor—indicating The Spirit of the Ocean—blinked lazily on the coastline. Across the room, Elmo and Lucas were sitting on the bed eating pistachio nuts from a bag. The shells were in a bowl, a myriad of tiny, gaping mouths that evidenced just how many had been gorged in the time Beatrice had been on the boat.

I’m done believing your twisted lies.” For a moment, I expected him to snap. But Lucious didn’t look angry. Instead, his grin only grew wider, more unsettling, like he was enjoying every word I said. He let out a short, breathless laugh, like I had just told him something funny. “Oh, you think you’re brave now, don’t you?” he said, tilting his head. “That’s cute. Really, it is.” Slowly, Lucious reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a phone.

“My office is in the city. I come down when I need a quiet cup.” She noticed the ring on his finger. No flourish. A simple band. He drank slowly, as if tasting everything but saying none of it. “You’re not from here,” she said. “No,” he said. “I’m not.” They spoke small things. The weather. The ferry. He asked a question about a pastry. He smiled and left his card on the table. It had a name she did not know and a number she would not call. When he stepped out, he paused at the cottage and looked up. For a second he seemed to weigh the place. Then he walked on.

He insisted so Elise had to give up, although she really wanted to see my expression about Lucian's crazy deeds.
