A hollow ache spread through my chest so slowly it almost scared me. There was nothing left behind. No scars. No proof. Nothing. I stared silently at the ceiling, feeling strangely empty inside. Not calm. Not peaceful. Just numb. Like my mind had stopped working because it no longer knew how to survive the pain sitting inside my chest. Then quietly, tears slipped from the corners of my eyes and rolled down my cheeks. My body had healed perfectly. But my heart felt ruined in a way nothing could fix. No supernatural healing could touch this kind of pain.

Cass waited until the deadbolt clicked behind her before she set the envelope on her coffee table. The apartment was quiet—too quiet. Even the city’s usual hum seemed muffled through the rain streaking her windows. She sat, letting her fingers hover over the silver-inked initials. Whoever had sent this hadn’t just known her name—they’d known her real one. Not the polished, harmless Cass Blake everyone met in daylight. The flap opened without resistance. Inside was a single sheet of matte black paper, the message printed in faint grey type, like a whisper in ink:

said Eva with tears in her eyes. I felt my heart break as she left. She was supposed to call her mom to pick her up and she didn't call her, she was just walking as if her heart had been cut out. It started to rain and the street to get out of my housing development was long. From the door I could see her farther and farther away and I felt less and less like walking.

After what feels like forever, she softly replies, “Sorry for not being there, but I had work to do and had to help my parents. I’ll be back soon. Don’t worry. How are you doing?” I swallow and slightly push out my lower lip, pouting. Timidly, I whisper, “Fine.” I’m anything but fine. My world has been turned upside down, and things scare me now, which would have never bothered me before. Sometimes, I think I’m going crazy. What is the hardest to deal with is the growing emptiness in my heart. I don’t know why it is happening, and no one will give me a straight answer about it either.

I feel so numb. I feel like I'm running out of what I feel like if I scream because I'm hurt but I can't. I want to ask myself what I'm lacking, why I wasn't good enough when I did everything. If he doesn't love me nor want me anymore I wish he would have just told me, maybe I will accept that instead of him making me because it hurts more than if he was honest with me. I held my breath several times because of thinking, my head hurts because I can't even give an answer to the questions that are forming in my mind. I want to rest because I feel so tired, I don't know how I will face the future without the person I was with.

I don’t know the answer to this. It is empty just like my heart and life. This thought saddens me. I feel loneliness, emptiness, and sadness inside my heart. These are the only things which I am feeling nowadays. My heart feels deserted now. Sometimes I feel like I am in a desert alone. I have no one with me whom I can call family.
