There stood Serenity, her small frame illuminated by the dim light in the hallway, her wide eyes filled with concern.
“I’m sorry I eavesdropped,” Serenity said quietly, fidgeting with the hem of her nightdress. Her face was flushed with guilt, her words stumbling over each other. “I heard Aunt Rylee crying, and I… I was worried. I didn’t mean to intrude.”
Rylee's expression softened instantly, her tough exterior crumbling under the innocence of the girl. Wiping away the last of her tears, Rylee stretched out a hand, her voice barely a whisper. “Come here, honey.”
