I felt exposed in a way the dress hadn't made me feel; without the glamour, I was just a girl who had been caught red-handed. Enzo was silent. He was dressed in a dark wool overcoat and a charcoal turtleneck, looking less like a Don and more like a high-level mercenary. He was staring at a tablet, his thumb swiping through the very logs he’d confiscated from me. Every time he paused, my stomach did a slow, painful somersault. "We’re three blocks away," he said, his voice cutting through the hum of the heater. He didn't look up. "Tell me about Dr. Aris."

He obviously knows me; no one but family calls me Alex. "God damn, you look hot." Before I can respond, he pulls me against his chest, wrapping both arms around my middle. He smells fantastic, like a mix of earth and spice. When I pull away, his buddy comes up behind him, slapping him on the back. "You about ready to go Chris?" Then he makes eye contact with me. "Ha-ha! Well, I'll be damned. It's little Alexandra Carpenter." I instantly recognize my older brother's best friend from high school. He's one of the unlucky ones who never escaped.

Fire exploded through my side causing a strangled cry to make its way out of me before I could stop it. The couch in the corner jolted as Enzo shot upright, his hair looked wrecked, his eyes were bloodshot, he was still wearing the blood-stiffened remains of his tuxedo shirt. His sleeves rolled, the top buttons were gone, and the crimson stains dried dark across the front. He crossed the room in two strides. “Baby girl—” His voice broke as his hands hovered, afraid to touch. “Hey. Hey, you’re awake. You’re awake.”

“What’s your big theory about him? What huge secret is Enzo hiding from everyone?” I wrapped one arm tightly around him, pulling him close against me. “I think Enzo found his mate,” I said, my voice dropping to a barely audible whisper. “That kid, Noah. He’s got Enzo completely twisted up in ways I’ve never seen or imagined before. Protective, insanely angry, acting like he truly can’t help himself from this connection.” Stan pulled back slightly, his eyes instantly glinting with mischief and disbelief. “A mate?” he said, his voice teasing. “Enzo? With a human? Are you completely serious right now?”

Many walk by us, and it won’t take long before some of those I went to school with notice us. “Rose, we heard you had gone to travel. Didn’t you find what you looked for?” One of them asks. And the others giggle sarcastically. “Hello, Tammie, yes I did,” I answer. “And who is this handsome stranger?” She asks flirting. But before I can answer, Enzo does. “Hello, I am Enzo. Rose’s Mate.” He says, and her eyes go big. “You found your second chance, mate?” She asked, surprised.

When they got to the airport, he unloaded her luggage and stood in front of her waiting to be dismissed. "I don't even know you anymore. You're just that creepy stranger I met at my husband's wake." She said quietly. He wiped her tears and kissed her forehead. "You never really knew me, I'm your Stranger Danger, remember?” He told her, as she blinked up at him. “I'll call you to set up the next project. Goodbye, Ellen."

I crossed my arms over my chest and frowned. “He did help me, but it doesn’t warrant me owing him anything. Things were happening, and I was desperate. The mystic pack was growing in power, and he gave me some information. He told me you were the target, and Beta Scott isn’t exactly a beta. He was a spy who duped us or Luna Sapphire.” A shiver ran down my spine. I permanently scarred his face. Enzo said they didn’t find his body in the pack, which means he’s alive somewhere. The mystic pack isn’t totally dead. I refuse to believe that.

It was basically a string and a strange, shaped shell. Nothing like I have ever seen before. “It is beautiful,” I muttered, squinting my eyes to try to make sense of the weird shell. He pulled my hair out of the way and put it around my neck. “It is a strange shell, but it is beautiful nonetheless, you just have to look closely to see it. Just like you Kali.”
