“Luca, I haven’t been honest with you. There’s something about my past… something about me.”
Ethan’s laugh slithered into the sacred space, cruel and amused. “Past? Call it what it is, Amara. A chain, a binding.”
Her head snapped toward him, her voice breaking with fury. “Stop.” The single word echoed, stronger than she felt inside. She turned back to Luca, eyes burning with tears. “I was married.”
The word dropped into the silence like a stone into water, rippling outward.
Luca’s jaw tensed, but his hand didn’t let go of hers. His eyes never wavered from her face. “Married,” he repeated softly, not as accusation, but as if tasting the shape of the word.
