Eric arose to his feet in an instant, his body tense and his light flashing as he gazed beyond the horizon. I followed his eyes, and my stomach dropped. The beast that emerged from the shadows was unlike anything we'd encountered before. It was huge, its body a twisted combination of flesh and darkness, and its eyes were molten gold, burning with terrible intensity. Its presence was oppressive, crushing down on me like a weight I couldn't lift. "You should have stayed in the light," it snarled its voice a guttural growl that seemed to come from all directions at once. Eric walked in front of me, his light shining stronger. "Stay back," he advised, his voice calm yet low.

Some thing was about to happen; she could sense it. Beside her, her loyal companion, a majestic black wolf named Luna, her grandmother, exhibited a restlessness of her own.
