Michael asked, his voice low and hard, grief braided with something far darker.
“Father, I was—” Emily began, sobbing.
“Don’t you dare call me ‘father,’” he snapped. “Where did you go for the last few days? Don’t lie to me.”
“I was at a resort,” she stammered.
I cut in, flat and quiet. “She was at a resort because she’d just signed a contract to hand the Grand casino to some man. She knew we’d figure it out, so she hid out.”
Michael laughed—bitter, incredulous. “So that’s why you kept nagging me to give you the casino. I even pressed Aria to hand it over.” His face ached with the sting of betrayal.
