Death Bliss
The way she asked about the photographs, not about the door.
She does not look away. She does not thank me for the compliment. She holds my gaze for three full seconds, and in those seconds I watch her understand what I have just told her. Excellence, in this house, is not a release. It is a deeper knot in the rope. The better she works, the longer she stays. The longer she stays, the more she sees. The more she sees, the harder it becomes to let her leave.
