Inside lay a folded parchment sealed with crimson wax: the Ember Circle’s original charter—and a second, smaller key of burnished silver.
She unfolded the charter carefully. The parchment crackled with age. The charter’s script spoke of oaths sworn by fire, of binding spells, and of the first prophecy: that two hearts united could awaken the Eternal Ember. But the margins bore a second notation in her great-uncle’s hand:
“Beware the twin key: one opens truth, the other, fate’s cage.”
Isabelle’s breath caught. She withdrew the silver key, its surface etched with a stylized sun and moon entwined. “Two keys,” she murmured. “One of serpent’s flame, one of cosmic balance.”
