Connor gives me a bewildered look and gazes back out the window in disbelief. “Who is Declan, Connor? Eddie Morano is a crazy asshole that everyone is scared of. How is it that this man comes along with a million-dollar car and kicks his ass without breaking a sweat? This is crazy.” I reply, holding my hands up in surrender. I understood what Evan was trying to say and quietly reined in all my emotions. He glanced at me once yet didn't stop walking, passing by as if I were a stranger. I let out a bitter smile and swallowed the resignation I had been about to tell Evan about. After all, he wouldn't care. My mind-link buzzed as I received a message from Toby. "Mommy, will Daddy be back to celebrate my birthday?" I froze for a moment and instinctively looked back, only to see Evan speaking softly to Selena with his head lowered. An emergency stretcher hurried past, and he instinctively drew her into his arms to shield her. The tenderness and possessiveness in his eyes were impossible to hide.

However, the deep shadows near the corner of the railing were not empty. A large man wearing a dark suit stood in the shadows. It was Evan. He leaned his broad shoulder against a thick concrete pillar, so he was partially hidden from the students below. He held a small, black burner phone pressed tight against his ear. He was not looking at me. Evan stared dead at Connor’s retreating back. His face was an emotionless mask of cold calculation as he watched the track captain disappear into the crowded bookstore. The sight made my blood run cold, because I knew Evan was supposed to be waiting for me in the car outside the main gates. He had followed me inside the building instead.
