Everybody Reads Novels & Stories

I open Spotify hit shuffle on my coffeehouse playlist for some lofi morning tunes and sit down at my desk. Being Monday and all. I check my emails. Update my daily to-do list on notion. Check my g****e calendar. Set my intentions for the week. Add the bash to my calendar as Josie asked. And finish planning the week out. When I’m finally done, I crawl back over to my bed. Picking up my iPad and begin reading my latest obsession. Romance novels. I mean my love life, is none existent. May as well live through the characters in the books.

I only need one person to. The main reading room hums softly with controlled quiet—pages turning, keyboards tapping, the distant whisper of a scanner pulling history into a machine that pretends neutrality. Morning light slants through tall windows, dust motes drifting lazily in the sun. Everything looks the same. That, somehow, makes it worse.

"Joel, I regret everything. I miss her so much!" I missed Anna too. But everything was over now. There was no going back.

White scraps of paper fluttered down from the air as though they were mocking my loneliness and disgrace. It felt as though an invisible hand had wrapped tightly around my heart, squeezing it until I could no longer breathe. I broke down, feeling like countless sharp knives were slashing into my body, carving invisible wounds that bled without leaving a trace. When I finally came back to my senses, I looked at my numb expression reflected in the mirror and let out a bitter laugh. It did not matter anymore. My deskmate, Elaine Jenkins, was the kind of girl who was born with a sharp tongue. She loved nothing more than embarrassing me in front of everyone. THE NOTE Everyone was quiet. They were all looking at me. Waiting. I hated when people stared. I opened the paper with shaky fingers. My heart was doing too much for a piece of paper. “I got the same drink you were having earlier. Didn’t know what you liked. Hope your day’s been okay. —L” That was it. Four lines. Simple. But something about it made the air feel heavier. I didn’t say anything. Just read it again. And again.
