She really couldn’t look her in the eye, even with how nice Even was with her and that's saying something. Evy is not nice. Maybe amicable and civil, rarely does she even show favoritism. But with the maid so small, Evy could easily distinguish her as a small brown puppy. She can't easily be cold to something as cute as a puppy.

Yet beneath it, I caught that same floral-rain note that marked her presence. We sat for a moment, neither of us quite ready to speak, just staring. Evie’s cheeks were rosy from the cold or maybe from exhilaration. “I… I never dared hope this would be the case,” she admitted softly. “I came to pick you up expecting to see an old friend.” She huffed a small laugh. “My parents and brother teased I should go to the Silverclaw gathering, too. I was dreading it—I thought it would be another failed attempt for me to find a mate. I never knew it was you all along.”

Pots and dishes shattered into pieces, and chairs and tables were overturned, leaving the place in complete disarray. Mayor Kingsley’s eyes were wide with anger, his voice full of menace. “Frank, you’d better give me an explanation. My son’s death won’t go unanswered!” Dad collapsed to his knees, trembling as he repeatedly bowed, his forehead quickly turning red and swollen. “Mayor Kingsley, it was that wretched Eve who caused all this. She’s already dead. I even fed her body to the pigs. Please, have mercy on me.” Mayor Kingsley sneered. “And you think that’s enough?”

I leaned back, eyes wide. “What … what was that?” “Practicing to punch a bad man,” she said, her cheeks puffed in pride. My jaw slacked. Did she even know who the bad man was? I let a soft, breathy laugh as I patted her shoulders lightly. “Okay, warrior, bring down your hands now. We don't need to punch him. He is already ruined without me.” She smiled brightly, then hugged me again. The door opened. Evie walked in first. She wore black and white assistant cloth, her hair let down. Her eyes were dark.

After I finished feeding the kids, I swallowed the nausea in my throat and made an excuse to wash the bottle so I could slip out of the bedroom. I clicked into Evie's profile. She hadn't shown her full face, but her background picture was a balcony shot. In the corner, there was a cartoon bear rug, and along the edge of it was a faint red wine stain. My breath caught in my throat. I had just bought that rug last month, and the pothos beside her foot was the same one I had repotted three days ago. That was my balcony.

Focused on it, Jim eased his way into the room around her. Stooping, he studied the images, mostly of her daughter. There was one of them together, holding a small fuzzy puppy that caught his eye. The girl was petite like her mother, but by his estimate, couldn’t have been more than five. But the photo captured his attention for another reason. Someone else took it. Who? “When was this?” Leaning around him, Teri glanced at the photo he indicated. “The day we got Evie,” she answered, deliberately vague. “One of my clients breeds Shelties. We happened to be there when a litter was ready for adoption. Evie was unclaimed and Zoe fell in love.”
