“Found her wandering near the border. Says she ‘knows Lucian.’” Amusement flickered in Marissa’s eyes. “Does she now?” I swallowed hard, hugging the puppy so tight it squirmed. “Please. I… I wasn’t trespassing. I didn’t mean to—” Marissa stepped closer, her perfume suffocating. She crouched slightly, eyeing me as though I were dirt on her shoe. “And who might you be?” “I…” The word caught in my throat. “My name’s Evie.” “Evie.” She rolled the syllables over her tongue like they were something foul. Then she straightened, turning to the growing crowd. “Funny. I don’t recall an Evie being part of this pack.”

She could not fake that one. People could change faces, but they could not change their blood and bones. Evie flipped through her notes and was satisfied that she could remember the contents. Her good memory was working and she was no longer afraid of not making it to university. Evely Hunt wanted to study design, but she never got to. Evie would do it for her. She was still immersed in her notes when she felt movement on her right. Evie quickly turned to the direction of the door and saw a mandrill standing there.

Seeing no other way to refuse, Evie slowly walked to the seat across from Brian. "Why do you work here?" Brian asked without wasting time. "Um, I work here because I love cake and also need a job," she said without thinking, then realized she had made a mistake and tried to correct it. "I love cake, b-but I don't eat it. I just love how pretty they come out." “I see” Brian said then turned to look at the counter, “my order should be ready soon, I’d like to pay” he said and Evie immediately got up like she had been waiting for that moment and rushed behind the counter with Brian walking slowly towards her.

She took the food I prepared into the tray and blink to me. I turned to Micheal who had started smiling at the sight of Evie. He slowly sank into the chair before her meal. Evie walked from my back to ward him. She stretched her hand to his shoulder, and planted a soft kiss on his cheek as he started eating her food. I swallowed the pain and walked away. I don't want them to see the pain in my eyes. “I can't let a strange woman poison my husband.” Evie said, purposely throwing a shade at me. I didn't look back to give her a response but I'm sure I'm going to get revenge.

Millicent praised me highly, giving me promotions and raises. Finally, we moved from the small townhouse to a bigger one. Evie was smart and hardworking, quickly standing out among her peers. By and by, we forgot those unpleasant things in the past. The next year, on Evie's field trip day, as we strolled the streets, she needed to take a picture with someone from our home country. But we were surrounded by crowds of foreigners, so finding the right person seemed tricky.
