Directing maids with tiny gestures. Occasionally handing me books without explanation. Usually the books turned out to be exactly what I needed. Eventually I stopped asking how she knew. Some mysteries simply existed. One quiet afternoon, while the children napped nearby, I continued reading through the bloodline book. The pages turned almost lazily beneath my fingers. Most sections described families already documented. Others listed extinct gifts. Nothing particularly surprising. Then... Something caught my eye. The edge of one page looked unusually thick. Almost... Folded.

Something that did not involve power, or demons, or expectations I did not understand. Carefully, I opened the book. The pages were aged, their edges softened with time, the ink slightly faded but still clear enough to read. The scent of it was faint but comforting, something old and steady, untouched by everything that had changed around me. My eyes moved across the words slowly at first, taking in the details of herbs I had never seen before, their properties described in careful, deliberate writing. There were notes on elixirs, on how different combinations could heal, soothe, strengthen, or restore.

The first review I read was from a literary publication that described the book as unflinching and specific and written with the particular authority of someone who had lived inside the thing she was describing rather than observing it from outside. The second review used the phrase inside view. Not from the methodology. From the book. From the chapter about the Marlowe's dinner and eating the meal alone and going home with every piece of yourself intact. The third review was not a professional review. I watch as she processes my words, her face going from scrunched and confused, to surprised until a wide smile splits across her face. "Are you serious?" she asks. I take the book from her hands and flip it open to the first sex scene and hand it back to her. I watch as her eyes flit across the page. As she reads, a pink flush spreads up her neck to her face until she looks up at me. "You read this whole book?" she asks, flipping through all of the pages. "Yep. Jack and I both did. And every week we go to book club to talk about it. The ladies have kind of taken an interest in us. Giving us some tips and things." I admit, feeling my face blush.

Gazing back towards the book, it felt as if something was pushing me towards it. I got up and walked towards the book. Placing it on my lap I noticed that the cover was filled with complicated detailing. The material felt rough, it felt old but well-taken care of. The colors were a mixture of ash grey, gold, and specks of white, the title was written in crimson red.
