I step out of the room and close the door. As we walk down the corridor, I take in the intricate detail of the door frames and wall borders. Pictures hang on the walls of Alex, a woman, and a boy with golden eyes who looks like her. As the pictures continue, you can tell the boy is getting older, but one stands out to me the most. It's a woman lying in a bed, holding a baby, with the boy on top and Alex. "Is this Alex's family?" The guard nods. We walk into a dining hall, and there are clear double doors off to the side. He goes to the door, opens it, and bows. "Thank you."

"You've grown attached." I met his gaze without hesitation. "She's my mate." "I know." "And I'll protect her." "I expect nothing less." For the first time since arriving, the corner of his mouth lifted into a faint smile. "A Guardian protects those who cannot protect themselves." He paused. "But remember this, Ethan." Her special ability was that any time danger was near, her scales would glow brightly, as would her eyes.

Something wasn't quite right I squinted in order to see better, but before I could make it out, Marcus also spotted him. "Hey, who's that?" he asked, already walking over to the kid with that grin that was always a sign of trouble. The rest of them simply jumped in line, as always, lining themselves up without even considering it. I lagged a bit, just observing us closing in. The kid hadn't spotted us or even looked up yet. That's when I spotted him. He was wiping his eyes--he looked kinda pale, like he'd been crying? I wasn't sure from where I was.

And I understood. The First Guardian wasn't asking Jane to do something she wouldn't do herself. She had already done it. Long ago. The realization left me breathless. Heartbroken. Jane cried out. The light intensified. The clearing shook violently. Ancient symbols exploded across the sky. The gateway roared. The scouts beyond the darkness screamed. And suddenly— Jane lifted into the air.
