She began to translate the last page of the sixth register, the final piece of a thousand-year covenant arriving at its completion in an island archive on a Tuesday evening with the Atlantic outside and the amber light inside and the full weight of everything built and being built still held steady.

I manage, my voice relaxed enough to sound normal. ​For the first time in my life, I found myself grateful for Milo's forced cooking lessons.
