I rolled my eyes and turned to defend myself. “What do you mean? I thought you told me to say I was representing Fabrizio.” “Was it necessary to lie about him breaking his fucking femur?” Rocco asked, even more annoyed. “Well…” I started, thinking fast. “I was trying to make it believable. I couldn’t just walk up to her and go, ‘Hey, I’m here for my buddy Fabrizio.’ That wouldn’t convince anyone, Rocco. That story’s boring. You’ve gotta add a little drama to sell it.”

But I don't break eye contact with this mysterious woman who's decided tonight is the night she stops being careful. The night we both do. "So what do you do,When you're not hiding in expensive hotel bars refusing to give your name?" A ghost of a smile apeaers on her face. "I traffic in narratives. I take messy, complicated realities and turn them into stories people can believe in. Make the unacceptable palatable. The truth into useful fiction." "Dangerous work." "Someone has to do it." She takes a sip, and I'm transfixed by the curve of her throat.

I knew the secret now—but how was I supposed to expose it? Smash the wall open? No. That would only put me in the same humiliating situation as before, letting him twist the story and paint me as mentally unstable. Staring at the markings on the blueprint, a plan slowly formed in my mind. I spent several days preparing. Then I procured a special type of smoke compound—completely harmless, but with an incredibly strong odor, like sulfur mixed with rotten eggs. Even the faintest leak would fill a sealed space instantly. Another Wednesday evening passed. Marc texted to say the new line was entering final review. He and the core designers would be working late, and I shouldn't wait for him.

"We build their lives. We give them friends—we'll create a dozen fake supporting profiles to interact with them. We post photos of them at barbecues, at the beach. We write bulletins about their boring, everyday lives. We make them utterly, convincingly real to anyone who stumbles across their pages." I paused, letting that sink in. "Then," I continued, my voice dropping lower, "Katie starts to complain. A bulletin post. 'Weird noises in the house again last night. Micah thinks I'm crazy.' A week later, another one. 'Micah set up a camera. He’s trying to prove I’m losing my mind.' We build the narrative, slowly, organically, right there in public." Leo’s eyes were wide now, the skepticism be

he said. She told him. The stories that survived. The communities that built record-keeping in narrative because institutions failed them. The specific, living practice of keeping things true by telling them. He listened. Completely. “Your stream and my unit,” he said when she finished. “Are having a conversation they didn’t know about,” she said. “Until now,” he said. “Until now,” she agreed. He held her gaze. “We should build something,” he said. “What kind of something?” she said.

I am issuing this statement personally because the nature of the fabrication warrants a personal response, and because I do not intend to allow manufactured narratives about my wife to go unanswered. The story, and the 'sources' behind it, allege that Lena Blackwood engineered a pregnancy for financial or contractual purposes. This is false. It is not partially false or contextually misleading. It is entirely and deliberately false, originated by a person with a specific interest in damaging my wife's reputation and our marriage, and I will be pursuing every available legal remedy against both the originating source and the outlets that chose to publish without verification.

That would involve a lot of thinking. "So what would happen to the current story I am updating?" "You can make the story a meta fiction. You can write about your life story and about your characters at the same time. You can easily make it a two in one story." "Easily? So what do you want me to write about myself? My life isn't even all that interesting. Shall I just formulate some sappy romance story for myself involving some hot jerk of a guy? Look, this does not even look too possible." I huffed, uneasy and uncertain about everything.

“You scared the poor boy, dude.” That was the first response he got from Damien Lau after he finished telling the whole story. The doctor visited him today, and he served some mineral waters to him. He was just a bachelor who didn’t really care about food at home and only had mineral waters with him. Despite being a bad host, the painter still dared to pour his heart out by telling the story that bothered him since yesterday. Yeah, he had told his friend about his ‘experience’ with his student yesterday.

Stammering and searching for a response, my stepbrother's impatience pushes me to speak up. "I-" I falter, my mind racing to concoct a believable story. Before I can gather my thoughts, he interjects, "The lights went out and you freaked out." His expression softens, offering a half-smile of understanding. Seizing the opportunity, I nod in agreement.. "Yeah, the lights went out and I was freaked out. The security wasn't around when I tried to reach them," I explain, fabricating a lie to shield myself from the painful truth that lingers beneath the surface.

There was one solitary, big book on a low table between them. "The title of the tale is The Binding of Autumn," he began, his voice an entrancing whisper just in harmony with the shriek of the fire. “It's the tale of a harvest god who offers a mortal woman a choice: one night of absolute freedom for one year of unimaginable riches for her people." He didn't move as his eyes met hers. "The consent is the matter at hand. It must be freely bestowed, not coerced, and whispered three times into the skin of his throat." “Do you have any idea what sort of story you're going to be reading me tonight?”
