Bailey: Drifter scream as he falls through the top floor and back on the third. "Holy shit," I yell as I step back. Watching as more of the floor breaks apart and falls, I have to jump through a window and into one of the rooms. Meanwhile, Rebecca runs back down the walkway. "Are you okay," I ask from the window, waving away some sawdust. "I'm fine," Rebecca yells, "But where's Drifter?" Hearing some groaning from below, I look down and see a silhouette in the dust cloud.

“Only one of you will make it out alive.” The world spun as Sasha plummeted into the abyss, the roar of the wind drowning out her screams. The light was blinding, flashing in chaotic pulses that made her head pound. She reached out, desperate to grab hold of something—anything—but her fingers met only empty air. Her heart raced as she thought of Ethan and Jaxon. Were they falling too? Were they even alive? A sudden jolt stopped her descent, and she landed hard on solid ground, the impact knocking the air from her lungs. For a moment, she lay still, gasping, her body trembling. Slowly, she pushed herself up, blinking against the dim light.

It rolled away, down the stairs, each successive THWANG echoing over and over all the way to the bottom, and it was like watching an old black and white film with no sound, in slow motion: Scott, falling backwards into the room. Jesse, crying out silently, reaching for Scott’s hands, Scott’s mouth working as he fell . . . For several precious seconds Scott Kretch was airborne, and Jesse thought for a moment that maybe Scott could fly.

THE LAST PIECE SOFIA POV We’re falling. Alessio crushes me against his chest. Gianna screams. Nikolai fires his gun upward at the cables. Sparks. Metal shrieking. Floor numbers flying past. Ten. His voice cut through everything. “Duck!” I dropped as another shot exploded behind me. Reuben was trying to escape, limping toward the door. I raised the gun. Aimed. But I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t pull the trigger. Jillian fired first. Reuben collapsed in the doorway, groaning. Alive. But barely.

I yell, my breath beginning to come in gasps. He stops, turning towards me slowly. I freeze when I see the twisted expression on his face. I’m already running towards him. “Are you alright?” He opens his mouth to answer but his eyes rolls back and he falls into a heap on the floor before he can get any words out. Everything comes in slow motion as I watch him fall to the floor with a thud. A second is too long before I’m sprinting to his side and shaking him to wake up. I look around but there’s no one to help me. Taking his face in my hands I shake him again. “Drew! Wake up! Did you have so much to drink?” I ask him despite knowing he can’t hear him.

His wings still out, tensed, and ready, the rest of us holding our weapons. He moved so fast I didn’t even see him. Sliding past the others as fluid as water going around rocks in a stream he came for me, I felt his arm snag my waist and my feet left the Earth. I heard Devon’s shots fire and Kenneth soared into the air in pursuit. Cassi let out a scream and I heard the others calling my name as we ascended, until they were just specks. Kenneth closing in, aiming his crossbow at Shamshiel’s wings, his purple wings beating as he tried desperately to keep up, his face contorted in anguish as he realized he would not be able to help me. Gus and his men had come up to her, dragging her to the edge of the roof like a dead dog. She kept yelling and struggling, but it was futile. The wind was blowing harder, disheveling Iris’s hair. Her face was filled with fear and despair. Heave-ho! A large force swung Iris off the rooftop. From the height of nine floors, in just three seconds, she fell all the way down at lightning speed. Bam! Her eyes were wide open as she lay motionless on the cement floor. Fresh blood stained a huge area of the floor. Just a few hours prior, she had still been imagining how pitiful Winifred would look if she committed suicide.
